Nashville: a city cut into three pieces
Nashville is the newest big-city crack in America. Davidson County votes about 65 percent Democratic, and for generations the city anchored a single Democratic district, the 5th.
In 2022 Tennessee's legislature cut the city three ways, as the map below shows: the 5th kept a wedge, and the 6th and 7th each took a slice, stretching every piece into Republican countryside until no district was Nashville's own.
Congressman Jim Cooper retired rather than run on it, saying the district had been dismembered. The redrawn 5th elected Republican Andy Ogles that November, and for the first time in modern history Davidson County had no Democrat in Congress. The state's delegation moved from seven-to-two Republican to eight-to-one.
