What is Gerrymandle?

Gerrymandle is a free daily puzzle about gerrymandering. Every day there is one new map: you draw the district lines and try to win the election, using the same packing and cracking that real map-drawers use. Everyone in the world gets the same puzzle, so a result can be compared and argued over.

Beyond the daily there are real gerrymandered maps from US history built from real precinct data, an interactive tutorial, a full archive of past puzzles, and community levels made by other players.

Why it exists

Gerrymandering is one of those ideas that is much easier to understand by doing than by reading. Articles explain wasted votes and packed districts; ten minutes of drawing the lines yourself makes them obvious. Once you have packed your opponents into a landslide district and cracked the rest across seats they just barely lose, you know exactly what a rigged map looks like, and you start recognising it in the real ones.

Gerrymandle exists to make that lesson a game. It is free, has no paywall, and needs no account to play.

Where the data comes from

The real maps are built from real precinct-level election results and real district boundaries, published under open licences. Each map's page credits its sources. The daily puzzles are invented boards, designed to be fun rather than geographically accurate.
